Knowing what changes took place on your system between two points in time can be of great help when trying to find out what happened to that elusive file or why your system’s registry seems to be acting funny lately. SysTracer will take a “snapshot” of your Windows registry, the files and folders on your system, and the applications installed on it to help you determine what happened since the last time you used your computer.

Taking a snapshot of your system’s file system and registry is probably the most straightforward of the program’s functions. With just one click of a button, SysTracer will perform a thorough scan and will record all the files, applications, and registry entries existing on your system at that specific point in time. By taking subsequent snapshots on different times and/or dates, the program will be capable of comparing them and telling you which registry entries, applications, and files have been modified, deleted, or changed in any way during that lapse of time. You can take snapshots of your own system or of any other computer that you can access remotely. Thus, network administrators will be able to monitor any change on any system on the network and even compare snapshots from different PCs to determine possible differences on their behavior.

SysTracer will provide you with detailed information about any changes that took place on your files and folders, any registry entry that has been modified, the programs that have been installed or uninstalled since the previous snapshot, the services and processes currently running on the system, the drives installed, the apps that run at start-up, or all the DLLs loaded at a given time. This will allow you to have an excellent overview of, say, the “consequences” of installing or uninstalling a specific program on your system or network – which registry entries have "suffered" modifications, which files and folders have been added or deleted, etc.

You can store and print all your snapshots, export and import them to and from other computers, save and print reports on the status of your system and lists with all the differences between the snapshots selected, etc. Despite its somehow dull interface – a minor flaw in an otherwise excellent utility –, SysTracer is an essential tool for system administrators and a bonus for any user interested in keeping track of all changes occurring it the background of their system which may carry serious consequences on its performance.
